Overnight Coffee Cake


This recipe is from Great Grandma Winnes.

Cake Ingredients:
  • 2/3 cup shortening or softened butter
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk (or 1 Tbsp vinegar or lemon juice + enough milk to equal 1 cup, let sit for 5 minutes) 

Topping Ingredients:
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 cup chopped nuts

Instructions:
  • Cream together shortening, sugars. Add eggs.
  • Sift together flour, baking powder, soda, cinnamon and salt.
  • Add dry mixture to creamed mixture, add buttermilk.
  • Pour mixture into a 9x13 inch pan.
  • Mix together topping ingredients and spread over cake batter.
  • Refrigerate overnight.
  • Bake at 350° for 35 minutes.
