Checkerboard Birthday Cake & Cooked Flour Frosting
Grandma Winnes liked to make checkerboard birthday cakes. It was always fun to cut into the cake and find a checkerboard!
The cooked flour frosting is a throwback to the times when things were homemade, not store bought.
How to make a Checkerboard Cake
- Using white cake batter, divide batter into two bowls.
- Add food coloring to one of the bowls of cake batter. Keep second bowl white, or add a different color food coloring to the second bowl.
- Prepare two round cake pans.
- Spoonful by spoonful, add one color around the outside of the cake pan.
- Add second color around the pan next to the first color.
- In the center of the cake pan, add the first color.
- In the second pan, spoon the batter using the opposite colors.
- Bake according to cake batter directions.
- It's okay if the color rings don't match up exactly.
- Frost with favorite frosting. Grandma liked to use Cooked Flour Frosting.
